| | Signal Knob |
Thanks in part to the looming presence of Signal Knob and the Massanutten ridge, the Stickman's Tandems 5K is one of the prettier races in the region. Fifty-five runners (including forty-three SVR members) showed up to enjoy the scenery on a relatively warm January morning just south of Strasburg, VA. Temperatures were in the mid-40°s and winds were picking up as the participants made their way around the enjoyably varied 3.1 mile course in the region known as Sandy Hook.
The Stickman | | Although everybody ran the 5K individually, prizes were handed out after the race to the fastest two-person teams in the categories of all-male, all-female, coed, and family. Race director Mark "The Stickman" Stickley paired up a number of teamless participants before the race so that nearly everyone would have a shot at winning a WFTR t-shirt, a Blockbuster Video coupon, a "How far did you run today?" hat made by Mark's wife Beth,
How far did you run today? | or one of the other varied prizes. Winners included not only the teams that topped each category, but also the teams whose combined times came the closest to 35:00, 40:00, 45:00, etc. In the end, well over half of the Tandems 5K participants ended up with prizes.
The fastest team overall was that of Jared Prunty & Frank Curiel, who topped the all-male category and came the closest to 35:00 with their combined time of 35:03. The second place all-male team
Allen & Sturm | | was also the oldest team-- 55-year-old Randy Wingfield and 62-year-old Pete Martin. Third among the men were Mike Allen & Herb Sturm. And Stan Brooks was right to have guaranteed teammate Paul Grosz that they'd win an award, as the two came the closest to 50:00 with their combined time of 49:59.
| | Novara & Eisenfeld
Grant & Hart | The youngest team was also the fastest one in the all-female division, as James Wood High School's Kristin Novara and Sherando High's Rachel Eisenfeld, both 14 years old, joined forces for a combined time of 44:49 (which was also the time closest to 45:00). Strasburg High School's Leslie Grant and Staunton, VA's Christina Hart were second among the all-female teams and had the third youngest combined age. And the Warren County High School duo of Michelle Shultz & Deanna Melton took third in the category and were the second youngest team. Interestingly enough, the five teams in the all-female category were the five youngest!
Bellingham, Yeck | | The legendary Sandy Adams pared up with Capon Springs, WV's Jonathan Bellingham to win the coed division with a total time of 42:00. Laura Nelson & Denny Maietta drove up from Harrisonburg to place second. The Warren County Middle School team took third, with teacher Kennon Yeck and student Christina Moore putting together a combined time just two seconds faster than John & Tracy Rice's. Alas, had John & Tracy competed in the family division, they would've been third!
But it was no contest for the family victory-- the husband & wife duo of Neal & Ruth Riemenschneider ran all over the competition, finishing as the second fastest overall team in 40:31 and coming the closest to 40:00. Relative newlyweds took the next two spots in the division, with Heather & Myron Kremer coming in second in 44:48 and Kim Weisgerber-Craig
The Craigs | & David Craig placing third in 51:55. Although the fourth place family team of Jerry & Mary Naylor didn't win anything, the Warrenton residents were the first father & daughter combo. And the dubious honor of finishing last among all teams went to Lynne & Audrey Lawrence, the first mother-daughter team.
Laura Nelson | | Of course, nearly all of the prize-winning team members mentioned above were at the top of the individual 5K results. Laura Nelson broke Ruth Riemenschneider's Winter Series winning streak with an excellent 5K time of 20:02 (good for fifth overall), but Ruth still took second among women in 21:14. Kristin Novara finished seven seconds ahead of Sandy Adams for third in 21:40, and Christina Moore beat out Heather Kremer for fifth in 22:03.
| | Curiel & Prunty | Teammates Jared Prunty & Frank Curiel dominated the men's competition, with Sherando High School star Prunty finishing in 17:26 and former Sherando coach Curiel finishing eleven seconds behind. Chris Northrup, one of three Tandems 5K participants who were not on a team, further cemented his lead in the men's Winter Series standings with an 18:20 third-place finish. Good ol' Neal Riemenschneider finished fourth in 19:17, and Jonathan Bellingham came across the line nearly a minute later for fifth place among the men.
As usual, a couple of post-race poll questions were included on the finish cards, mainly to take up space. The first question asked, "Who will win the Super Bowl?" Although it was common knowledge that the Baltimore Ravens would be squaring
Nancy Specht chose "the criminals", referring to the Ravens | | off against the New York Giants in Super Bowl XXXV the following day, perhaps the specific Super Bowl should've been identified in the question-- because we wound up with write-in votes for the Bills, Bears, Cowboys, Dolphins, Steelers, and even the old Baltimore Colts! One person picked "Bud Lite", apparently confusing the Super Bowl with the old Bud Bowl commercials. There were also votes for the New York Yankees baseball team (yay!) and the defunct Minnesota Lakers basketball team. But by a 22-8 vote, the Ravens emerged as the official Stickman's Tandems 5K Super Bowl pick, and sure enough, they clobbered the Giants the next day, 34-7. The Tandems 5K now has a 1-1 Super Bowl prognostication record. Check out the sidebar in the right column for a full list of poll responses and a nicely-designed pie chart.
The other post-race poll question was: "What is your favorite animated cartoon duo?" This may have been a little too complex for delirious runners to answer,
Silly Jon Whitehead picked "Bugs & Bunny" | as fourteen people managed to misread either the "animated", "cartoon", or "duo" parts of the question. ("Bill & Hillary Clinton" actually managed to get two votes, with a third vote going to the former president and his running mate Al Gore. Of course I hope I managed to count these votes correctly...) Among the proper responses, Rocky & Bullwinkle emerged as the top vote-getters with four, followed closely by Sylvester & Tweety and Tom & Jerry with three votes each. Various cartoon duos followed, including Charles Bowles' relatively obscure vote for He-Man & Battlecat. (Geez, Chuckles, I'm surprised you're old enough to remember "He-Man"!) To see all of the poll answers, head over to the sidebar at right or check out the race results.
As usual, we must thank the race director and his stable of volunteers, without whom the Tandems 5K would not have been possible. Mark, of course, was in charge-- be sure to check out his "On The Run" column on the first Wednesday of every month in the Northern Virginia Daily. (Past columns and local high school sports coverage can be found on the Stickman's Web site.) Among the folks helping out at the race were the Stickman's wife Beth, who handled registration; the Stickman's mom Gloria Stickley, who worked registration and the finish line; the Stickman's dad Ralph Stickley, who served as a course marshal; the Stickman's course-marshalling cousin
Girl Scout Troop 286 of Front Royal | | Larry Baker and Larry's wife Jane, who helped us get use of Signal Knob Middle School and who worked at the finish line; Jerry Anderson, Mr. Finish Line himself; Kim Yeck, Kevin Grant, & Michael McKiernan, more course marshals; and Kim Weisgerber-Craig & Jonathan Whitehead, who helped compute the team results. Let's also thank Andrew Shearer of WFTR 95.3 FM/1450 AM for the t-shirt donations. And let us not forget the best course marshals of all, the girls of Girl Scout Troop 286 of Front Royal and their scoutmaster, Courtney Wood! Great job, everyone.
| | Go teams go! | Feel free to take a look at the 140 race photos, thumbnailed and prettied up for your convenience! If you ran the race, there's at least one picture of you in there. Many thanks to Kim Yeck for taking a bunch of the photos with a camera loaned by Leesa Anderson. Of course we've got individual results and team results for you, too. Hope to see you next year at the third annual Stickman's Tandems 5K!
