Sunny skies and a dearth of races in the DC area helped a new Winter Series attendance record to be set at this year's Treasure Hunt 5K! Seventy-eight runners (sixty-five of whom were SVR members) and two dogs encountered temperatures in the mid-30°s and patches of ice as they sped through the orchards to the east of Clarke County High School in Berryville, Virginia.
Jason Page | | Race director Nancy Specht littered the course with "treasure cards" just before the race, and runners were allowed to pick up a card as they ran. Each card had a number on it, and the lower your number was, the sooner you got to pick out a prize from the lavish prize table after the race. Most of the prizes were groceries or snacks, but there were also a few ritzier prizes,
Judy Masi | including a pair of almost-new running shoes (donated by Joel McKenzie & claimed by Dustin Sweeney) and a bottle of wine (donated by the Kerbys & claimed by Judy Masi). Many thanks to all who donated prizes or unwanted holiday gifts. Jon Palks and Judy ended up with the first crack at the prize table, but everyone eventually took home something!
(Rumors of dishonesty in the treasure hunt have surfaced, however. We have heard about runners waiting to pick up a treasure card until they were cooling down after the race. And one lovely participant reportedly picked up his treasure card while he was warming up before the race-- which allowed him to look at a number of cards to find one with a low number. For shame! Heck, why would one cheat to win groceries?)
Mark Stickley | | Meanwhile, there was a running race going on, and in the end, Mark Stickley zoomed his way to a relatively easy overall win in 16:46. Three of the next five spots among the men were taken by out-of-towners: the
Chris Northrup | ubiquitious Ted Poulos finished second in 17:29; Ron Young came all the way out from Annapolis, MD to place fourth in 17:51; and Rick Norton of Falls Church was sixth in 18:43. Third overall was taken by Clarke County's own Dustin Sweeney in 17:37, and men's Winter Series points leader Chris Northrup finished fifth in 18:28.
Emily Harrison | | 43-year-old Ruth Riemenschneider captured her fourth Winter Series win in a row, covering the 3.1 miles in 21:20. Warren County High School star Emily Harrison finished second among the women in 21:55, sixteen seconds in front of the legendary Sandy Adams. Not too far behind Sandy was Warren County Middle Schooler Christina Moore, who crossed the line in 22:27. And SVR Senior President Kim Weisgerber-Craig rounded out the women's top five with her 22:58 finish.
Included on the finish cards was a treasure-themed quiz question: "Name any person who has served as the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury." Few realized that the signature of the Treasury Secretary appears on every U.S. dollar bill, but a surprising 24 people did manage to come up with correct answers. Mind you, most people answered with last
Michael Triantafillou picked "all who sign the $$$" | names only, and some of these "correct" answers (notably "Kennedy", "Blumenthal", and "Mellon") may have been in reference to other notable people with the same last names. Still, nine people answered with the name of Alexander Hamilton, the country's first Treasury Secretary (his face appears on the ten-dollar bill), and eight people came up with the name of Robert Rubin, who served under former President Clinton. Check out the sidebar at right for a full list of responses and a pretty pie chart.
Mark Belanger is gunning for Pete Martin | | The finish cards also included a poll question: "What was your New Year's resolution?" Most folks set running-related goals ("To beat Mr. Martin in a race!", Mark Belanger; "To beat Judy Masi!", Lynne Lawrence; "Find a new set of lungs", Nancy Specht; "Try to get more people to run cross country", Rachel Eisenfeld)... Some are aiming for personal improvement ("To stop saying 'um'",
Adam Markley wants "sleep!!" | Jon Whitehead; "To stop seeking external praise", Julie Kerby; "To be kinder & gentler", Gabby Vaughn; "Read more", Michael Wilcox; "To be the best SVR president I can be", Kim Weisgerber-Craig; "No more Twinkies", Laurie Volk)... Some had thoughts of recreation in mind ("Save money for my trip to Disney World in December 2001", Kennon Yeck; "Save money so we can go to Florida for Spring Break", Elizabeth Scholder; "To kayak the Shenandoah River from Bentonville to
Beth Heick resolved, "no more excuses!" | | Route 7", Kathy Smart; "Celebrate New Year's every night", Ruth Riemenschneider)... Some hoped to have an influence on their wives ("Beef up for Ruth", Neal Riemenschneider; "Get my wife to run", Mark Stickley)... And of course, four people (Mike Brown, Nancy Gauthier, Dustin Sweeney, & Jen Peachey) already broke their resolutions by resolving not to have a New Year's resolution at all. Check out the results page to see everyone's New Year's resolutions.
Thanks to Nancy Specht for doing her usual excellent job of putting together the race! Nancy was even able to run the race herself thanks to her crew of volunteers: finish line workers Don Specht, Jerry Anderson, Rick Kerby, & Doug Lawrence; course marshals Jessica Tavenner, Becky Foster, Beth Stickley, & Mike Eisenfeld; course markers Dustin Sweeney & Charles Bowles; course unmarkers John & Tracy Rice; and utility infielder Karsten Brown. Our thanks to all who made the Treasure Hunt 5K a successful event!
