| Male 13 & Under |
|
| This age group was as close as it gets! 11-year-old Carlin Kulp, who had never done any serious running before the series, held a three-point lead on 13-year-old Roy McKenzie going into the final race, the Claymont Retro Ramble 5K. Roy looked to be surging a bit, however, and he could've caught up to Carlin in the points by beating him at Claymont by at least three places. And Carlin did end up finishing behind an ill Roy at Claymont-- but by just three seconds and two places, which meant that Carlin held onto first place in the age group by one point! Congratulations to both youngsters, really, as they've both shown a good bit of hard work and dedication this winter. |
| Ineligible: Simon Biddle-Snead, Kevin Robb, Josh Flax, Steven Cahan, Scott Holman, Dillon Robb, Jimmy Sempeles, Nathan Milam, Tony Artone, Sean Beardmore |
| Male 14-16 |
|
| Andrew Haywood takes the age group! The Fort Valley native got off to a slow start, missing two races early and allowing Winchester's Brad Allmendinger to leap into the lead. But four straight victories over Brad were enough to give Andrew a decided edge in points. It's the first Winter Series for runner-up Brad, though, and I'm we'll be seeing more of him! |
| Ineligible: Daniel Nally, Brian Markley, Adam Markley, Trey Mason, Zach Bradford, Josh Bent, Kyle Scheren, Robert Verdecchia, Luke Gravatt, Will Scheren, Kyle Anderberg, Clay Schutte |
| Male 17-19 |
|
| We've tossed the awards for this age group in the trash. Former Clarke County High School cross-country teammates Dustin Sweeney and Charles Bowles were the only ones to meet the eligibility requirements, but both finished in the top five and will be taking home overall awards. So we're not giving 'em age group trophies, too-- heck, Dustin & Chuckles would probably just start whacking each other with 'em anyway. |
| Ineligible: David Bolton, Bobby Lockhart, Jared Prunty |
| Male 20-29 |
|
| Exhibiting running form not seen since days of yore, Karsten Brown, clearly the handsomest competitor in this year's series (or the male with the longest hair, anyway), has chicken-winged his way to the victory among males 20-29. His understudy, Jonathan Whitehead, lunged into second and will take over the duties of first place if Karsten should be unable to perform them. |
| Ineligible: Mike Brosenne, Ryan Bayne, John Sine, Jamey Waters, Justin Thaine, Chris Holub, Eric Chandler, Joe Cerreto, Richard Ternes, Jared Nieters, Brian White, Eric McDonald, Frank Jung, Leroy Flores, Michael LaPointe, Joe Pelkofski, Joe Wilde, Nate Reeser, Chad Roberts, David Fahrenthold, Kyle Johnson, Tim Jones, Brad Slack, Kenny Dickey |
| Male 30-39 |
|
| With Frank Curiel and Mark Vann both finishing in the top five, new club member Mike Capraro of Ashburn ran to seventh overall and a solid age group win... Not bad for his first Winter Series! Second in the age group went to Winter Series veteran David Black, who used the series to get himself back into his old running form. Take a look at Dave's improvement from the beginning of the series to the end and you'll see what I mean! And although the rest of the guys in the age group didn't end up with awards (aside from perfect attendee Terry Leckie), you gotta applaud 'em for showing up race after race despite being in a difficult age group. |
| Ineligible: James Kerby, Mike Brown, Andy Lewin, Rob Allen, Bary O'Melinn, Mike Onda, Kelly Vanover, Fredy Carreon, Stewart Lockhart, Kevin Reed, Mike Stevens, Bryan Quick, Warren Kohm, Wayne Cottrell, Ned Barrett, Mike Buchness, Keith Burkhart, Thomas Robb, Phil Griffin, Chet Bingham, Chris Johnston, Jeff Orndorff, Rick Cockrill, John McGrath, Mark Croson, David Titus, John Younis, Rob Hoxton, Tim Osowski, Greg Poersch, Andy Brittain, Mike Burton, Ed Rantanen |
| Male 40-49 |
|
| Last year's Winter Series men's winner Neal Riemenschneider ended up on the outside looking in this year. Absences and speedy youngsters left him with sixth overall, one spot out of the top five. But hey, the 47-year-old ended up with more than enough points to win his age group! The battle for second was close; Mike Meadows and Joel McKenzie went back and forth during the entire series. At the Claymont Retro Ramble 5K, however, Mike's fifth victory of the series over Joel was enough to give him the second place trophy. (Your Webmaster always ended up somewhere near these two, and lemme tell ya, there was some good running going on!) |
| Ineligible: Stan Brooks, Bill Osuch, Jerry Scholder, Larry Camp, Rob Davies, Mark Belanger, Denny Myers, Michael Eisenfeld, Sid Smith, Tim Quigley, Steven Dobbin, Jim Shaughnessy, Ray Scheren, Larry Baker, Roy Wians, John Winkert, Michael O'Grady, Glenn Gravatt, Kurt Lambrecht, Tim Belotte, Chip Dodson, Christopher Nolan, Greg Nolan, Brion Sumser, Charlie Weiss, Tim Taylor, Chuck Jackson |
| Male 50-59 |
|
| This age group was all but decided long before the final race. 51-year-old Fred Franklin of Linden brought his times down as the Winter Series progressed, which pretty much guaranteed him the victory. And long-time club member Randy Wingfield may have ended up behind Fred, but the 56-year-old was way ahead of the other competition! |
| Ineligible: Bill Senseney, Ray Kitchen, Chuck Raper, Doug Fanning, Pat Griffith, Roger Kilgore, Jon Palks, Ric Francke, Jerry Updyke, Dan Nally, Butch Proctor, Ric Leobold, Giles Avery, Gil Langley, Rene Dennis, Bent Ferrell, James Tiffany, David Holub, Jeff Osman, Tom O'Lonnon, Robert Jones, Tom Fromme, Woodrow Hopper, Jerry Naylor, John Bolton, Phillip Warren |
| Male 60-69 |
|
| How 'bout these guys, eh? Terry McCarthy and Robert Gurtler may have had virtually no competition in their age group, but I think they earned their awards anyway! 67-year-old Bob came all the way out from The Plains, VA for the last six races, and Terry drove out from Leesburg for seven races and did some impressive running for a 66-year-old. |
| Ineligible: Bill Melson, Al Tyree |
| Male 70 & Over |
|
| 76-year-old Bob Atkins of Winchester wins his second Winter Series age group award! Last year, Bob ended up with fewer points than Berryville's Robie Cone, but because the then-77-year-old Robie hadn't run enough races to meet the five-race eligibility requirement, Bob won the award. This year, however, Bob's victory over Robie was decisive! And because both men ran enough races this year, both get awards. |
