Final Race Status: CANCELLED

Wed. 5 March, 11:45 PM-- The Winter Series is over, folks! The Retro Ramble has officially been cancelled, ending the series early after seven races. Yes, we managed to work around bad weather all winter and get all of our races held up to this point, but the snowstorms of the past month have finally caught up to us.

Said race director Rick Kerby on Wednesday night: "Claymont's representative... said that the Claymont committee would prefer that the race not be held this weekend given the ground conditions. I don't blame them-- though there was some melting today and will be some more Friday, it won't be enough to clear the grounds and provide adequate parking. Also, a bunch of cars would tear up the grounds in their current condition, so I believe this is why they don't want the race held. ...Next weekend is also not doable as Claymont has a couple of groups scheduled including some who will be staying at the barn [where our 5K is usually staged], so the facilities will not be available to us. Please extend my apologies to the running community."

And so ends this year's Winter Series, not with a bang but a whimper. Hey, we're not happy about it either. Let's just hope we get better weather for next year's series, eh?

Sure, the 1970s have been over for twenty-three years, but this race is still stuck in the Me Decade. Yes, the Claymont Retro Ramble 5K, the only 1970s-themed running race in the known universe, is back for a fourth running! We admit that it's a little bizarre, but it's also a great deal of fun. So come celebrate the decade that brought us the "running boom", jogging suits, Frank & Bill, women in the Boston Marathon, and of course President Jimmy Carter's famous collapse at the Catoctin Mountain 10K in '79. Wear your best '70s-style clothes (if you have any), 'coz we'll be giving out a prize for the best outfit! We'll also give out prizes to the winners of our post-race '70s trivia contest, and we'll be crankin' out some '70s tunes on the stereo before & after the race... oh, and there's the 5K run, too! If you have a lava lamp or other '70s paraphenalia (legal paraphenalia, that is) that you think might add to the ambience of the event, please contact race director Rick Kerby!

start time
Does anybody really know what time it is? Yeah, actually, 9:30 AM.

registration and entry fees
No preregistration is necessary. Race day registration is from 8:30 to 9:15 AM. Entry fees are $3 for SVR members, $4 for non-members, and $1 for students. SVR membership applications will be available so that you can join the club on the spot and take advantage of the member discount!

course
Just about five kilometers on both paved and unpaved roads in the vicinity of the Claymont Court property. It's the same course we've used in previous years. I seem to recall the existence of a couple of respectable hills, but still, it is an enjoyable course!

questions?
Contact race directors Richard "Shaft" Kerby and The Funkadelic Julie Kerby at (540) 955-3185!

further Winter Series info
Information on severe weather & cancellations, Winter Series points, and series awards are available on the main Winter Series page.

location
The Great Barn at Claymont Court, approximately 4 miles southwest of Charles Town, WV. (Yep, this is the same location as last year, though the old children's school doesn't exist this year.) The property is located approximately 25 miles from Winchester, 35 miles from Front Royal, 13 miles from Berryville, 20 miles from Martinsburg, WV, and 80 miles from Washington, DC. We've got maps of the site set up for you on either MapQuest or Yahoo Maps. (Note: As usual, MapQuest's driving directions feature will not be able to give you correct directions to the final location, and Yahoo's driving directions might end up getting you lost on various back roads. I'm starting to wonder why these sites even bother with their driving direction features!)

driving directions
From Berryville, Front Royal, & points south: Follow Route 340 north into West Virginia. 5.7 miles past the WV border (and 1.6 miles past where Route 340 turns to four lanes), turn left onto "Old Route 340". Take an immediate left onto Huyette Road, and follow Huyette for approximately 2 miles to the Great Barn on the right.

From Winchester, Leesburg, & points west and east: Follow Route 7 to Berryville, take the Route 340 exit, and head north towards Charles Town. 5.7 miles past the West Virginia border (and 1.6 miles past where Route 340 turns to four lanes), turn left onto "Old Route 340". Take an immediate left onto Huyette Road, and follow Huyette for approximately 2 miles to the Great Barn on the right.

From Martinsburg & points north: Take Route 9 south towards Charles Town, then follow the Route 340 bypass south of Charles Town to "Old Route 340". Take an immediate left onto Huyette Road, and follow Huyette for approximately 2 miles to the Great Barn on the right.
