Claymont Ramble
Winter Series Race #8
Claymont School near Charles Town, WV
Saturday 6 March 1999

The 1998-99 Winter Series came to a close with the Claymont Ramble 5K, and what a finale it was! The Ramble had it all-- action, drama, adventure, special guests, inclement weather...  Who needs TV when you've got events like this one?

Race directors Rick and Julie Kerby fielded many calls from interested runners in the weeks before the race, but unfortunately Mother Nature conspired against the expected large turnout. Just minutes before the 9:30 AM start, a cold rain began to fall, sending participants scrambling for their Gore-Tex. But once the race began, most took the rain in good humor as they followed Rick Kerby's revised 5K course and circled around Claymont Court and lands once owned by George Washington's nephew.

Sandy Adams won the women's race, but the real victor of the day was runner-up Krista Farris, who clinched her first-ever overall women's Winter Series victory. For the men, Bobby Lockhart took first place and the men's Winter Series title; second place went to DC-area iron man Ted Poulos, who quickly drove off on his way to another race (we presume).

For Jim Shaughnessy, the Claymont Ramble was a heartbreaker. Trying desperately to hold off Bill Senseney in the overall men's Winter Series standings, Jim decided to run the race in spite of a plantar injury that had been nagging him for two weeks. He tried to run through the pain, but a mile or two into the race, Jim heard a popping sound come from his foot, and he knew that it was over. He valiantly struggled to an 11th place finish, but he won't be able to run again anytime soon. By finishing, though, Jim nabbed the fifth and final spot in the overall Winter Series awards. I'm sure we all wish Jim and his foot a speedy recovery!

Patrick Farris didn't have quite as rough a time at Claymont, but things could've gone better for him. Out on the dirt roads halfway through the course, Patrick took a wrong turn, and he ended up running an extra mile or so. He was seen to be smiling after the race, however. We hope no lawsuits will be filed.

Special thanks go out to the race directors, to the Claymont School, and to everyone who brought t-shirts for the camp for disadvantaged youths. Keep checking back with the SVR Web site-- eventually we'll have pictures from the race!
