Valentine's Day 3.4 Miler
Winter Series Race #6
Lincoln, VA
Saturday 13 February 1999

Perplexingly, this race was called the "Lincoln Valentine's Day Race" and yet was not held on Valentine's Day. Even more perplexingly, this was a race in the Shenandoah Valley Runners' Winter Series and yet was not held within the Shenandoah Valley! Not many club members were up to the long drive over to the other side of the Blue Ridge. Those that were, however, got to participate in a challenging and hilly event put together by that nice Raylene Scott. (Raylene encourages you all to eat more of the post-race bagels next time.)

Working hard against the chilly wind that met the runners head-on over the last mile, Bobby Lockhart emerged victorious among the men (as usual). Sandra Adams, on the rebound from a nasty fall two weeks earlier, topped the women's race. Following Sandy by a handful of seconds was Florida-bound Toni Cruz, participating in her final SVR race. Toni thought that it was a fitting farewell, as she had also run her first race in Lincoln years ago. We'll miss you, Toni!

In other news, newsletter editor Richard Kerby returned to the running scene at this race, after having been incapacitated by an Achilles tendon injury. Rick proclaimed that he was not racing, however, and true to his word, he allowed Brian White to beat him by two seconds. He also allowed the still-injured Webmaster to beat him by more than a minute. Whatever happened to the "gimp division", Rick?
