Last summer, Kelly was more than half way through her dream of becoming an Optometrist. On September 1st, 2015 she became ill with what seemed like an everyday virus. Four days later she was on a ventilator at UVA, fighting for her life. After 33 days of uncertainty, she finally began her battle to recover from ADEM (Acute Demyelinating Encephalomyelitis). Her brain and entire spinal cord suffered from severe swelling that left her quadriplegic. Since October 2015, she has been in daily rehab to regain what she has lost. This fall she is going back to school to finish her last semester before going on rotations. We’re hoping to raise funds to purchase vital equipment that will allow her to continue her rehab while still completing school. Specifically, an electrical stimulation bike ($23,000 and not covered by insurance) and a standing frame ($6,000), which will help prevent complications related to paralysis and get her back to walking. All proceeds will go towards purchasing this equipment.
